Hoard’s Dairyman Farm Creamery Cheese Takes First at 2021 Wisconsin State Fair
Fort Atkinson, WI – Hoard’s Dairyman Farm Creamery received two blue ribbons at the 2021Wisconsin State Fair for its Belaire Port Salut-style cheese in the Open Class for Semi-soft cheese and for the creamery’s Gouda variety in the Gouda and Edam cheese class.
“Receiving first place honors at a competition of this importance is a testament to the quality of our very special Guernsey milk and the skill of our cheesemakers,” said Sandy Speich, Creamery Director. “We knew our cheese was something special and to have this confirmed by some of the country’s top cheese experts is truly gratifying,” she added.
Judges scored the Creamery’s first place Belaire Port Salut-style variety at 99.45 out of 100 possible points. It is a classic, rich and creamy cheese that’s highlighted with a distinctive orange rind. The Creamery’s first place Gouda variety scored 98.95 out of 100 points in its class. This cheese is known for its solid texture and complex character. It starts out with an aromatic, sweet, caramel-like flavor and becomes more savory and nutty with age.
W.D. Hoard, founder of the Hoard’s Dairyman Farm, was a pioneering publisher and former Governor of Wisconsin. In 1885 he launched the legendary magazine, Hoard’s Dairyman and soon after established a herd of Guernsey cows on a farm just minutes from the publishing office. Today, descendants of Hoard’s original herd still call the Hoard’s Dairyman Farm their home, and his magazine continues to be the most influential publication in the dairy industry.
